North East ISD and Child Find

Special Education Evaluation Process

Every child learns differently, and some children may need additional support to succeed in school. North East ISD is committed to identifying and evaluating children who may have a disability and need special education services. This process, known as Child Find, applies to children ages 3–21 who attend or reside within the district, including children who are homeschooled or attend private schools. Parents, teachers, and other school personnel may refer a child for an evaluation when they suspect a disability that may affect the child's educational performance.

When a referral is made, the district reviews the concerns and determines whether a Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) is needed. With parent consent, a qualified evaluation team gathers information about the child's strengths, needs, and educational performance through assessments, observations, interviews, and a review of existing records. The evaluation considers all areas related to the suspected disability and is provided at no cost to parents. Parents are important members of the evaluation process and are encouraged to share information, ask questions, and participate in decisions about their child's education.

After the evaluation is completed, the school and parents review the results to determine (1) whether the child meets eligibility requirements for one or more of the following disabling conditions described under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and (2) if the difficulties resulting from any identified disability(ies) demonstrate a need for supports and services beyond those available in the general education classroom.

If the child is eligible, the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee, which includes the parents, develops an individualized education program (IEP) to address the child's educational needs. If the child is not eligible, the school team can discuss other supports and resources that may help the child succeed. Parents who have concerns about their child's development or educational progress are encouraged to contact their child's campus or the North East ISD Special Education Department.
