Reading/Language Arts instruction uses the Four Blocks curriculum written by Patricia Cunningham. It is made up of four different areas.
Guided Reading provides an opportunity for reading instruction with teacher support.
Self-Selected Reading allows students, through the Accelerated Reader program, to choose books on their individual reading level, and to develop silent reading skills and fluency. Comprehension is checked through computer tests.
Working with Words utilizes word wall words and spelling patterns to increase the child’s knowledge of words and decoding skills.
The Writing Block provides children with the various skills needed to become better writers and to develop the writing process.
Math curriculum (TERC) uses an investigative approach to problem solving with the primary focal points at Grade 2 of comparing and ordering whole numbers, applying addition and subtraction, using statistics and money, and using measurement processes (length, capacity, weight, time, and temperature). We also have strands that cover geometry and multiplication /division.
Social Studies: Our curriculum is the study of community, with continued focus on the state and nation, both now and in the past, as well as emphasis on geography and good citizenship.
Science: Learning through experiences and investigations, we develop scientific skills through the study of life science, earth science, and physical science.
Students visit the computer lab weekly where they participate in various activities that enhance their technology skills and are based on our current topics of study.
