Kindergarten is a time of exploration and learning how to learn. The children begin reading instruction with learning the letters and their sounds. Next we blend the sounds and begin to read words and books. We use small group instruction along with whole group shared reading and writing. The children's writing skills begin with learning how to form the letters and then link the sounds to the letters. Through copying and modeling the children learn to construct their own sentences. In math we explore number concepts. The children learn to write the numbers and construct an understanding of sets numbering up to 20. We explore addition, subtraction, time, measurement and money. In Science and Social Studies Kindergarteners explore different concepts such as change, the basic needs of living organisms and how the children fit into different communities.
