First Grade

First graders work with the Four Blocks Model for their Reading and Language Arts curriculum. The Four Blocks are Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing and Working with Words. Some of the goals children work toward mastering are basic sight words, rhyming words, blends, vowel discrimination, as well as many other skills. Our school wide Accelerated Reading Program contributes to student success!
The math curriculum is primarily based on TERCS Investigations, which enables students to be successful mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. The primary focal points at first grade are addition and subtraction of whole numbers, as well as organizing and analyzing data. The last nine-week period focuses on geometry, statistics, and data.
The course of study for Social Studies is Home, School, and Community, with some introduction to state and nation. First Grade Science courses: Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science are integrated throughout the curriculum. First graders, also, learn empathy training with our Second Step curriculum. This training helps children learn invaluable techniques and strategies to help them get along with others in our world now and in the future.
