In Fifth Grade, Math and Science are integrated through Standard Based Curriculum. We use hands-on activities, as well as cooperative groups. Fifth grade students learn about Number, Operations and Quantitative Reasoning. We use algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve meaningful problems. They continue to develop an understanding of equivalent fractions and decimal representations. Students in fifth grade select and use formal language to describe their reasoning as they identify, compare, and classify shapes and solids; and they use numbers, standards units, and measurement tools to describe and compare objects, make estimates and solve application problems.
Reading and Language Arts are based on non-fiction units aligned with the Science and Social Studies TEKS. Pre and post assessments are administered to assess student's prior knowledge and progress. Metacognitive strategies are modeled and focus on comprehension through the use of graphic organizers and webs.
