Student Dress and Grooming

Philosophy and General Statement: It is our professional belief that school performance and future success are enhanced by appropriate dress and grooming. Parents/guardians are strongly urged to work closely with the school to insure their child's adherence to high standards of dress and grooming expected in the North East Independent School District. Parents are strongly urged to enforce moderate hair styles and high standards of dress and grooming for their students. Parents will be serving the welfare of our students and helping us as educators by emphasizing standards of neatness, cleanliness, safety, and decency in dress and grooming.
The following specific rules are to be followed by all students in the North East Independent School District:

  1. Halter tops, exposed midriffs, strapless tops or exposed backs, see-through blouses, tank shirts and excessively worn and frayed jeans are not permitted. Clothing with inappropriate advertising or statements that are offensive or inflammatory (alcoholic beverage, sex, tobacco, drugs, gang, satanic, etc.) are also prohibited. Pants, skorts, and shorts shall be worn securely at the proper height around the waist.
  2. Clothing not specifically designed to be worn in public cannot be considered appropriate school attire.
  3. Appropriate footwear is required. Footwear that has toes reinforced with steel, hard plastic, or similar materials is specifically prohibited. Stacked heels for K-5 students can cause sprained ankles and falls when worn during P.E. or play.
  4. Shorts, skorts, culottes and split-skirts will be permitted provided they are neatly hemmed, conservative and modest in appearance. Specifically prohibited are cut-offs, frayed-hem shorts, bicycle shorts, gym shorts, wind shorts, form fitting, skin-tight shorts or pants of lycra, spandex, or other similar material.
  5. Dresses and skirts shall be modest in length and appearance.
  6. Shorts, dresses, culottes, skorts, and skirts shall not be shorter than mid-thigh.
  7. Shirts and blouses shall be tucked in at all times, unless they are specifically made to be worn outside (tunics, etc.)
  8. Body piercing ornaments shall only be worn on the ear lobe.
  9. Parents/guardians are encouraged to enforce moderate hair styles.

A review of dress and grooming policies will be made periodically and changes will be made as needed. While it is inevitable there will be differences of opinion as to the appropriateness of dress and grooming, the final determination will be in the judgement of the building principal. The student who does not comply with this code will be removed from the regular school setting until the student complies with this code. In addition, the dress code rules and regulations will be more restrictive in an alternative educational program.
Please help your child begin his or her day in a positive manner by following our NEISD dress policy.

Thousand Oaks Safety

The safety and well being of your children is of utmost importance to us. We take special steps each day to ensure your child's safety. Your cooperation helps us most these safety goals.

Campus Visitors - When visiting our campus for any reason, please make sure you stop in at the office, sign in and receive a Visitor's badge. If you have been issued a PTA volunteer badge, you may wear that. Visitors in the building who are not wearing badges will be asked to return to the office, sign in and receive a badge.

Morning Supervision - Our doors open at 7:15 a.m. each morning. There is no adult supervision until this time. Students who are dropped off prior to this time have to wait on the dark patio until the doors are opened. This creates a potentially dangerous situation for our students, as various people walk down Henderson Pass en route to the bus stop and neighboring businesses.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up - When dropping students off and picking them up each day, please use the proper lanes. All loading and unloading of children should be done in the pick up and drop off lanes. If you need to come into the school to conduct business, please use a parking space in the visitors' parking lot. A police officer works daily in the morning and again in the afternoon to control traffic exiting the lot. The faculty lot is for staff members only. Please do not drop students off in this lot because this is also a school bus drive through, both morning and afternoon. Also, please refrain from dropping students off behind the school near the portables. The students know this is neither safe nor acceptable.

Emergency Numbers - If you have changed jobs or addresses, please notify the office and clinic immediately. We need to be able to contact you in case of an emergency.

If your child is to go home with a friend, or in a way that is different than he or she normally does, please send a note to the teacher, This prevents any confusion at the end of the day and ensures your child is going with the proper person.

Inclement Weather Procedures

In an effort to keep you informed of procedures in our school building, we ask that you read the following information regarding inclement weather dismissal of our students. While it may be frustrating to wait for your child past normal dismissal times, please keep in mind that the safety of your child is of the utmost importance to us. During these rare occasions of inclement weather, we use the following guidelines for dismissal.

  1. Students who ride either a North East or day care provider bus will be called by bus number or day care name to be dismissed. The students will go to the cafeteria to wait for loading by bus number.
  2. Walkers and car riders will remain with their teachers until the buses are loaded. Upon announcement from the office, teachers will then dismiss these students.
  3. Parents who wish to come inside to get their children should come to the office for the release of those students. All students must be checked out through the office.

When it is raining and the children can wait under the portico, we will bring the students outside. There may be two exceptions, 1) if there is lightning or, 2) the wind is blowing the rain to this area. If this is the case, we will not bring the students out until it is safe for them. Bike riders and walkers will remain in our supervision until they can be dismissed to go home.

This inclement weather procedure has been reviewed by the NEISD Risk Management office. Other large elementary schools in the area also follow similar plans. It would be advantageous to both you and the school if you could talk to your child about inclement weather dismissal so your child knows exactly what to do should we have a downpour, lightning storm, tornado, etc.

Dismissing 1000 students safely and efficiently takes work and patience. Thank you again for your understanding.
