Is Your Child Ready for Kindergarten?

He or she should be able to:

- put on clothing, button buttons & zip zippers
-tie shoes
- hang up coats & jackets
- recognize own printed name
- sit quietly, listen, pay attention and for short periods
- follow simple directions
- answer politely when spoken to
- share and take turns
- accept some responsibility
- be able to remember and obey simple classroom rules
- be able to function in the classroom without crying

Help Your Child Prepare for Kindergarten:

- Read to your child and tell him or her stories.

- Listen to what your child has to say.
- Limit television viewing to non-violent programs.
- See that your child has between 10-12 hours of sleep nightly.
- Help develop control of large muscles by ball bouncing, skipping, etc.
- Help develop control of small muscles by coloring, cutting, etc.
- Have your child mind when told to do something.
- Praise or correct the behavior, not the child.  The child needs to know he or she is loved even when punished.
- Consider kindergarten educationally important by allow the child to be absent only when ill.
- Help your child learn to write his or her name in correct form (first letter capitalized and the rest of the letters lowercase).
