Your Child Prepare for Kindergarten:

Read to your child and tell him or her stories.

Listen to what your child has to say. |

Limit television viewing to non-violent programs. |

See that your child has between 10-12 hours of sleep nightly. |

Help develop control of large muscles by ball bouncing, skipping, etc. |

Help develop control of small muscles by coloring, cutting, etc. |

Have your child mind when told to do something. |

Praise or correct the behavior, not the child. The child needs
to know he or she is loved even when punished. |

Consider kindergarten educationally important by allow the child to be
absent only when ill. |

Help your child learn to write his or her name in correct form (first
letter capitalized and the rest of the letters lowercase). |

Letter Recognition, Letter Sound, and
Number Activities:

Trace letter/number with finger as you
are saying its name.

Look for particular letter/number in
newspaper, magazine, etc., cut them out, and glue onto paper.

Practice writing letter/number over and
over while repeating its name.

Make letter/number out of clay,
play-dough, pipe-cleaners, wikki stix, etc.
-
Circle letter/number in magazine or
newspaper.
-
Highlight letter/number in magazine or
newspaper.
-
Use magnet letters/numbers on the
refrigerator.
-
Look for particular letter/number on
street signs, license plates, menus, stores, grocery shopping,
etc.

Write outside with sidewalk
chalk.

Paint letters/numbers on
paper.

Write letters/numbers in shaving
cream.

Read everyday to your child -- look for
specific letters/numbers, use your finger to track as you read words,
stop and ask questions, etc.

Practice writing your child's name (First
letter capital, the rest lowercase).

Write letter on paper, have your child
cut out and glue pictures of objects that start with that letter on the
page.

Write number on paper, have your child
cut out the appropriate number of items and glue on the
page.
Fine Motor Skills:

Use pencil grip.
