2011--2012


First through fifth grade students at Thousand Oaks Elementary School are invited to travel around the globe as they improve their reading skills and nurture their love of reading.

This year's Accelerated Reader geographical theme of visiting the continents encourages students to learn to readand read to learn through reading practice with both fiction and non fiction.

All students who are reading independently are invited to join this year’s reading journey.  Students will be invited to share what they learned about interesting people, places or things (like animals) that are representative of the country or continent that they are exploring through postcards they they will be asked to design. Student's first names will be posted on the AR bulletin board when they reach the Accelerated Reader Point levels for their grade level.

Kindergarteners and first graders, not yet reading independently, are invited to participate in other Read Kids Read activities such as Read for the Record on October 7th and the Read Around the School events scheduled for October and May.  All Thousand Oaks Students and their families are encouraged to spend at least 20 minutes each day reading for enjoyment.

* At 5pts 1st graders will qualify as world explorers.
**Students are expected to maintain an average of 85% or better on ther AR quizzes
.

Second through fifth grade students who reach their level #2 Point Goal by April 14th will be invited to participate in an AR Point Club Activity to be held in May.

Second and third graders will be invited to AR Day at the Book Fair.

Fourth and fifth graders will take a field trip to the IMAX to get a up close view of an interesting world destination.

Kindergarten and first grade students who have reached their level #2 Point Goal
by May 13th will participate in a Theater Arts Activity to be held in the library.

Level #1–A Paperback Book Pick from the book basket
Level #2– Qualifying level for the AR Spring Activity & A World Travel Certificate
Level #3-  Hardback Book Pick
Level #4- Passport for the World Explorer Awards Activity
Level #5- World Globe

 

Teachers are utilizing the Accelerated Reader program to support students’ sustained silent reading instruction in ways that are most appropriate for their grade level and are celebrating each student’s achievement in the classroom.  Students are being monitored and encouraged to read books that are in their reading range.  Parents are requested to assist with making certain their children are reading appropriate titles for their age and maturity.
