The School Nurse conducts various
screenings throughout the school year. Whenever medical or dental
problems are discovered through the school's screening program, parents
will be notified immediately. Parents are urged to follow through with
these reports by contacting their physician for a more comprehensive
examination.
Vision
&
Hearing Screenings
are done during the first months of school in Kinder, 1st, 3rd,
and 5th grade. New students are also screened as soon as
possible after they are admitted to the school district. Any other
student that is referred by a teacher or by parent request may also be
screened. If a student fails the screening, the student is re-screened
at another time to rule out fatigue or possible congestion that might
have interfered with the student’s hearing. Upon failing a re-screen, a
referral will be sent home. Please have your child checked and return
the completed referral form to the school clinic within three weeks.
Acanthosis Nigricans
Screening is done in 3rd, and 5th grade. This
screening is usually coordinated with the Vision & Hearing Screening or
the Scoliosis Screening. This screening identifies a darkening and
thickening of the skin around the neck that has been linked with excess
insulin in the blood, indicating insulin resistance. This condition may
also serve as an indicator for future development of Type 2 Diabetes.
The condition can be easily evaluated by a physical examination of the
neck, but can also be found in the armpits, groin, elbows, knuckles, and
knees. If a student has this marking on the neck (a positive finding)
then height, weight, blood pressure, and body mass are measured and the
parents will be notified.
Scoliosis
Screening is done in 5th grade. This screening evaluates any
possible abnormalities of the spine. If there is a positive finding, a
referral for a physician's examination will be sent to the parents.
More info.
Dental Screening is done in 3rd Grade during February, which is Dental Health Month.
