5th Grade Strings

The Serna Strings class is offered to fifth graders only. The students are bused to Regency Elementary School on Mondays and Wednesdays after school and learn to play violins, violas, and cellos. They are actively working on music for many different concerts throughout the year. Their teacher, Mrs. Malone, is having lots of fun teaching these great kids to make beautiful music.

Library Aides

All fourth and fifth grade Serna students are eligible to become library aides. These hard working student volunteers will be working in the library before school to run announcements organize the library, and assist in assorted tasks that help the Library run efficiently. Not only are they performing "School Community Service," but they are working on technology, organizing books and resources. One perk of the job is that these kids become very familiar with the technology and materials in the Library collection and get to know some really great books and resources!

Robotics

Fourth and Fifth grade students that are responsible and display EXCELLENT behavior are selected for the very important job of serving as members of the Robotics Club.

Meeting weekly, the students work with a large assortment of parts including sensors, converter cables and motors, in order to build programmable robots. Teams of students "mind-storm," build, test and then record their findings in an engineering journal.

Together they determine the purpose of their robot and list tasks to follow in its construction. Limitations of their design are noted, and schematics are illustrated.

Safety Patrol

Fifth grade students with EXCELLENT behavior and responsibility are selected for the very important job of serving as Safety Patrols.

They are responsible for hanging our flags and attending to the safety of our students, teachers and parents in the morning as they man the crosswalk and help students out of their cars.

They also assist kindergarten teachers in the afternoons, helping their students to the correct buses so everyone gets home safely.

Thanks for the great job you do!

Serna choir

The Serna Choir is in its nineteenth year and is made up of 4th and 5th graders who rehearse before school on Tuesday mornings. Choir members are held to the highest standards of behavior and academic achievement and truly are "the best of the best" at Serna Elementary.

Serna Student Council

The Serna Student Council is made up of elected representatives from each classroom of third, fourth, and fifth graders. It meets to organize and carry out school-wide activities that are of interest to the students.

These activities have included sponsoring a food drive for the San Antonio food bank and collecting stuffed toys for the Shelter for Battered Women, as well as sending candy and cards at Christmas and Valentine's Day to senior citizens in a retirement home.

Students raise money through the school store to meet their particular goals and help with ongoing school projects.
