North East ISD Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program

The purpose of the NEISD Safe and Drug-Free Schools program is to provide a safe, disciplined, drug-free environment for students so they can learn and be successful. Our goal is to enhance student attitudes, behaviors and skills so they can achieve academic and social success and be productive members of the community. Safe and Drug-Free Schools program efforts focus on helping connect all students to their school and community and helping them realize the contributions that they make are valuable.

Principles of Effectiveness Significant Legislation

Safe and Drug-Free Schools porgram efforts are based on Principles of Effectiveness to ensure that Title IV funds are used on materials and resources that are most likely to prevent and/or reduce drug use and violence among young people. The Principles of Effectiveness are:

•Programs based on needs assessment, risk and protective factors

•Local Advisory Council to provide support

•Scientifically research-based programs and activities providing evidence that strategies prevent or reduce drug use, violence or disruptive behavior

•Evaluation to assess progress and to redefine, improve, and strengthen program.

•Parents involved in program development

The Safe and Drug-Free Schools program is federally mandated. Since 1991, all school District receiving and federal funds have been required to develop and implement a drug-free schools plan. Drug-Free efforts were expanded to include violence prevention efforts in 1996. Comprehensive district and campus SDFS components include:
