ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT:
RETENTION AND PROMOTION

EIE (R)

CLASSIFICATION OF STUDENTS (ENTERING THE 9TH GRADE PRIOR TO THE 2003-04 SCHOOL YEAR)

Students shall be classified at the beginning of the school year according to the following:

1. To be a sophomore, a student shall have five units of credit.

2. To be a junior, a student shall have ten units of credit.

3. To be a senior, a student shall have earned a sufficient number of credits so that the total credits earned by the end of the current school year shall satisfy the graduation requirements of the district.

CLASSIFICATION OF STUDENTS (ENTERING THE 9TH GRADE BEGINNING WITH THE 2003-04 SCHOOL YEAR)

Students shall be classified at any time during the school year when promotion requirements have been met:

1. To be a sophomore, a student shall earn a minimum of five credits . One credit must be earned in English and one in mathematics. (Math credit may be high school credit earned in middle school.)

2. To be a junior, a student shall earn a minimum of 11credits. Two credits must be earned in English; two credits must be earned in mathematics; one credit must be earned in social studies; and, one credit must be earned in science. (One math credit musts be earned in high school.)

3. To be a senior, a student shall have earned a minimum of 17 credits. Three credits must be earned in English; two credits must be earned in mathematics; two credits must be earned in social studies; and, two credits must be earned in science. (Two math credits must be earned in high school.)

GRADE ACCELERATION PLAN

A "Grade Acceleration Plan" form shall be completed for any grade acceleration. [See EIE (E)]

SECONDARY READING GRADES

Reading grade for grades 7-8 shall be treated in the following manner regarding the promotion/retention of students:

1. If a reading course is required because the student has been identified as one or more years below grade level in reading ability, then the reading grade shall be averaged in with the language arts grade as outlined in Policy EIE.

2. If the reading course is an elective, or is being taken for enrichment purposes, the grade shall be averaged separately as all other elective course grades.

AUDITING

No student may audit a course.

DUPLICATE CREDIT (STUDENTS ENTERING 9TH GRADE PRIOR TO THE 2004-2005 SCHOOL YEAR)

A student may not receive duplicate credit for a previously passed course. If a student repeats a course at any time, both original and repeated grades shall be included in class ranking calculations.

DUPLICATE CREDIT (STUDENTS ENTERING 9TH GRADE BEGINNING WITH THE 2004-2005 SCHOOL YEAR) A student may not receive duplicate credit for a previously passed course. If a student repeats a course at any time, both original and repeated grades shall be included in cumulative grade average but not in class ranking calculations. Only the original grade earned is included in class rank calculation.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

High school credit courses taken in middle school shall not be included in class ranking calculation and cumulative grade averaging or for promotion purposes.
