Internet/Network Acceptable Use Guidelines

When a district establishes Internet services, the district's specific purpose is to enhance the learning process and augment the educational environment. Because the Internet is an open and unrestricted environment, the potential exists for accessing material that may not be considered to be of educational value. Acceptable use is critical to ensure a safe and rewarding educational environment. All users of Internet resources must conduct their "cyberactivities" in a manner consistent with NEISD policies. Simply phrased, every user should remember that the rules of conduct and courtesy that apply in a classroom or school setting apply also in cyberspace.

"Acceptable use" falls into several categories.

Safety of Self and Others:

·         System users should always report to their teachers or other school personnel or any other appropriate personnel any message received that is inappropriate or makes them feel uncomfortable.

·         System users should not reveal personal information about themselves or others.

·         Student system users should not agree to meet with someone they met on-line without parent knowledge or participation.

·         System users should not use the system to threaten others.

·         System users should use appropriate language for the educational environment and for the educational activity in which they are currently involved (no swearing, vulgarity, ethnic or racial slurs, or any other inflammatory or threatening language).

·         System users should not transmit (send or receive) obscene pictures or messages.

Access and Uses:

·         System users should not send messages under a false identity.

·         System users should not access e-mail, files and/or documents of other users without permission.

·         System users should not use the Internet for financial gain or for political or commercial activity.

·         System users should not use the system for purchasing products or services.

Copyright Laws:

·         System users should be aware of copyright laws and should follow them.

Illegal Activities:

·         System users should not use the system for illegal purposes or any other activity prohibited by district policy.

System Security:

·         System users should not attempt to harm equipment, materials, or data.

·         System users should not knowingly infect a computer or network with a virus.

·         System users should not knowingly disrupt the network.

·         System users should not provide passwords to other users.

·         System users should always report any known violations of the NEISD Acceptable Use Guidelines to a teacher or supervisor.

Respect for System Limitations:

·         System users should not download large files unless absolutely necessary.

·         System users should check e-mail frequently and delete messages promptly.

Dear Parents:

As a result of the passage of the bond package, the North East Independent School District is establishing a district-wide network to facilitate the educational process and administrative services.  This network will also allow access to the Internet.

The Internet is a global network that contains databases, reference materials, and resources.  This global resource can extend students' educational experiences far beyond those currently available.

Along with the use of this new resource come certain responsibilities.  Though all training in the use of the district's telecommunications network will emphasize the ethical use of this resource, it is possible that your child may come across some material you might find objectionable.  While the district will take reasonable steps to preclude access to such material, it is not possible for the district to guarantee that it can completely prevent such access.

Please take a few minutes to speak with your child(ren) regarding the attached NEISD Acceptable Use Guidelines provided by the district.  Although district teachers and administrators will continue to emphasize ethical behavior, your help in stressing the importance of the guidelines will go a long way toward ensuring compliance.  I ask that you read the attached district Acceptable Use Guidelines and sign below to indicate your preferences for your child's interaction with the NEISD electronic network.

Sincerely,

Richard A. Middleton
Superintendent
