Nancy Clayton Visits Redland Oaks
For Redland Oaks’ fifth graders, the month of May ended with the Civil War drums and living history performance of Nancy Clayton. As a researcher for the Children’s Civil War Literature Special Collection at the U. S. Civil War Center at Louisiana State University, this former Texas educator presented our students with a masterful collage of Civil War history, photographs and stories about boy soldiers, reproductions of weapons, and military drumming. A descendant of a Civil War general, Nancy Clayton captivated the students with her authentic military uniform, her military drumming, and her fascinating historical accounts. Asked what they liked best about this Civil War presentation, students responded, “All of it!” Nancy Clayton, a resident of Utopia, Texas, has become a springtime highlight of the fifth grade social studies curriculum. Staff and students look forward to her annual visit. June, 2008 |
