Churchill AVID students delve into genetics, visit Witte genome exhibit

On Monday, Apr. 6, freshmen and sophomore AVID students from Churchill High School visited the Witte Museum. The students visited the exhibit called "Genome – the Secret of Life."

The AVID students explored the microscopic world of DNA and discovered where they came from, who they are and who they may become. The students also manipulated the 5,000 square feet of hands-on discovery displays to learn more about genome mapping and how it can positively impact lives. Through the Genome displays the AVID students learned about the genetic recipe for life, cell exploration, experienced the genomic science of solving crimes, curing genetic diseases and improving the production of drugs and foods.

The exhibition provides an interactive way to understanding genome research. Genome features a grand eight-foot-tall, 25-foot-long genetic model of the DNA double helix, a Discovery Theater that displays video of stories on genomic discoveries, a Hereditary Slot Machine that reveals the odds of children inheriting genes for specific characteristics and a Cookie Factory, simulating the production of genes and proteins as the ingredients and recipes to the making of human life.

Several of the students emphasized how the Genome exhibit enhanced their understanding of the materials and lessons they learned in their Biology classes.
