Redland Oaks elects new leaders
|
Redland Oaks Elementary held its Student Council elections on September 19 with almost twenty student politicians in fourth- and fifth- grades filing for five offices. Principal Dr. Mary Longloy announced the officers of the 2008-2009 Student Council as: Chloe Mae Beasley - President; Kyra Falcone - Vice President; Marissa Fuller - Secretary; Kyle Benson - Treasurer; Sydney Adams - Environmentalist; and Matthew Rich - Chairman of Lost and Found. More than 180 students cast ballots. Throughout the days of campaigning, campus corridors displayed the candidates' colorful posters, and many students wore homemade campaign stickers, featuring their favorite candidates. Wrapping up a week of campaigning, an assembly featured the candidates as they delivered their persuasive speeches. "The experience taught students about the importance of American citizenship and having the right to vote," said Daphne Terrell, assistant principal. "Students also considered the qualities of leadership, including commitment, passion, and persistence - rather than voting for the most popular student, classmates considered who would best represent them in the various offices." These newly elected officers attended the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association leadership camp with their sponsors, Caron Canady and Kelly Winton, on September 24. The camp was designed to build leadership in the areas of citizenship, scholarship, school spirit, responsibility and teamwork. The officers were reminded how important every job is no matter how big or small. Through activities, songs, and chants the students learned to take pride in what they did, to finish what they start, to do what is right, and to be tough and fair. Each was encouraged to keep the promises they made, to be loyal to Redland Oaks and its community. "While Redland Oaks records the names of the newly elected student council officers, the Redland Oaks staff wants to recognize all of the outstanding candidates who threw their hats in the ring for this year's election," said Terrell. "Service and leadership were two of the goals of each of this year's candidates. These are fine goals that make a difference every day at home, in school, and in our community." |
