Reagan Rattlers named best of the best in San Antonio, win trophy

On Sunday, June 22, 2008, Reagan High School was announced as the winner of the Dan Cook Cup. This award symbolizes the high school in the San Antonio area with the best total program achievement in athletics.

Points are given to each team sport for advancement into the playoffs and that point total increases as teams move further into the University Interscholastic League (UIL) playoff system. The Rattlers won the award with a total of 144 points. Churchill finished in second place.

"In the highly competitive UIL District 26-5A where it is an accomplishment just to be in the playoffs the significance of this achievement is magnified even more," said Jerry Comalander, NEISD Executive director of athletics. "Congratulations to the Rattler athletes, the coaches and all who had an involvement with this outstanding achievement.

The Dan Cook Cup is patterned after the Lone Star Cup which is given by the UIL to the high school in the state with the best overall athletic program. This year's Lone Star Cup winner is The Woodlands High School in the Conroe ISD. Reagan High School finished in a tie for seventh in this year's final standings. In previous years North East has had Churchill High School as the winner of the Lone Star Cup in two different years since the award began.

"The North East athletic department recognizes and applauds the contribution of all our student athletes in every sport," said Comalander. "Our school district supports all the University Interscholastic League sports and invests financially with equipment, facilities and personnel to help our students be the best they can be. Our appreciation is extended to all the students who chose to be in the athletic program at Reagan High School."

In their run for the title, the Rattler's had teams in the playoffs in the following sports:

  • Football – state quarterfinalist
  • Volleyball – regional finalist
  • Cross Country – state meet qualifier
  • Team Tennis – regional finalist
  • Basketball (G) – area finalist
  • Soccer (G) – regional quarterfinalist
  • Soccer (B) – regional finalist
  • Softball – area finalist
  • Baseball – regional finalist

"This is a great way to end the 2007 – 2008 school year in athletics," said Comalander.
