Reagan cheer teams earn top awards at NCA summer camp

The Reagan High School Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshman Cheerleading Squads earned top awards at one of the largest National Cheerleading Association (NCA) summer camps held at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The Varsity squad earned three blue ribbons (rated superior), one red ribbon (rated excellent) and a bid to the national competition. In addition to ribbons, the squad received the coveted Spirit Stick two nights in a row, and brought it home. Other awards include: Motion Technique award, Best Tumbling award, Top Team Performance Cheer award, Champion Chant award and the Dorothy Herkimer Award Best Overall Team award shared with the Junior Varsity squad. In a vote by the other campers, the squad also received the "Herkie" award for Sportsmanship. The Junior Varsity squad also earned three blue ribbons (rated superior), one red ribbon (rated excellent) and a bid to the national competition. The squad received the coveted Spirit Stick all three days of camp and took the stick home. Other awards include: S.P.O.T. Safety and Stunting award, Top Team Performance cheer award, Best Tumbling award and the Dorothy Herkimer Award Best Overall Team award shared with the Varsity squad. The Freshman squad continued winning ribbons for the school by receiving two blue ribbons (rated superior), one red ribbon (rated excellent) and one white ribbon (rated outstanding). In addition to taking home the Spirit Stick, the squad also received a bid to the national competition. "Reagan Mascots did their best to show the camp how entertaining the crowd is done," said Marta Flores, Reagan cheer director. Ribbons were awarded to all four Reagan mascots. Senior Audrey McKnight received a Blue (superior) ribbon upon first evaluation and seniors Kym Verona and Kaitie Willet and sophomore Samantha Hamilton received Red (excellent) ribbons. McKnight, mascot captain, received the Best Mascot trophy, out of 30 mascots; Verona earned the Leadership award and Willett mastered the Most Improved trophy. "These fun ladies also represented Reagan well in several categories," said Flores. "In all, Reagan mascots continue the tradition of excellence with great energy and rattler spirit." Junior Paige Hutchinson received the highest award possible, Top All-American of the entire camp consisting of more than 3,000 campers. |
