Madison student shows talent in mariachi


Madison High School student, Selina Elizondo, tied for first place in the high school division at Ford’s 12th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Vocal Competition. Elizondo performed a medley named Serenata Huapanguera, which highlighted her vocal abilities and placed her in the top spot.

“I was a little worried when I suddenly got a sore throat because of allergies," said the Madison senior.  Elizondo's musical career began at Stahl Elementary School. When she was in the third grade, she grew interested in mariachi music. Her parents enrolled her in vocal and violin lessons, and as she practiced and improved, she began to compete and win in competitions.

Below is a list of some of Elizondo's vocal achievements. In addition, she has also won two scholarships in vocal competitions.

1999 - Third place in the Elementary/Middle School division
2000 - First place in the Elementary/Middle School division
2002 - First place in the Elementary/Middle School division
2003 - First place in the High School division
2005 - Tied for Best in the U.S. Mariachi Vocalist
2006 - Tied for first place in the High School division

Ford Motor Company has sponsored the event, and is considered to be the biggest of its kind in the Southwest and the only one juried by members of the renowned group Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán.
