MacArthur students join SAWS Water Conservation Project

Eight MacArthur High School seniors joined the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) Student Water Action Team (SWAT).  SWAT encourages water conservation and community involvement among high school students.

The team surveyed approximately six percent of the campus, including faculty and staff, asking different questions about water usage at the school. The team also looked at the campus as a whole and came up with water saving and money-saving ideas. The students presented their findings to Ms. Bobbie Turnbo, MacArthur principal, and provided concrete suggestions to lower water consumption at MacArthur. Some of the ideas included replacing toilets with low-flow toilets when areas undergo renovation, replanting areas of grass and non-native plants with native plants and xeriscaped areas. The students also found an area where rainwater could be collected, recycled and used for landscaping which would be another area of water conservation for the campus.

SAWS will host a banquet on May 17, 2007 for the students to present their findings to the SAWS panel and Chief of Staff.

The students were recently presented a banner of recognition that has been placed in the main office at MacArthur High School. Pictured below are the students in SWAT: Sofia Cisneros, Erine Duggan, Kimberly Flores, Kurtis Gonzales, Denise Hernandez, Jacob LeBouef, Erin Moore and Sarah Reid.
