Lopez students beat the heat through summer camps

After wrapping up a year of firsts, Lopez Middle School kicked off the summer with two camps: Basic Office Productivity Computer Camp and Recreational Camp. Approximately 80 students participated in the two summer camp programs.

The Lopez H.A.C.K.E.R.S. Club sponsored a Basic Office Productivity Computer Camp. This camp introduced students to Microsoft Office Suite with some intense lessons and assignments over a two week period. As a result of the students' hard work and successful completion of the program two days early, they got a chance to get hands-on with LEGO NXT Robots.

"My favorite parts were making the arms move and the programming," said Andy, a seventh-grader.

"I liked putting them together," said Mikala, a sixth-grader.

Lopez established their computer and robotics club this past spring, and they will assist the district in piloting a robotics after school program for regular middle schools this 2008-2009 school year.

The Lopez P.E. department sponsored the first Recreational Camp for Lopez students. Students were able to work in the weight room and participate in team sports and activities.

"I'm glad I got to come and hang out with my friends while lifting weights," said Brandon, an eighth-grader, when asked how he felt about the camp.

"Rec Camp really helped to break up the boredom of my summer," said Steven, a sixth-grader.

"We're a community school," said Dr. Barry Lanford, Lopez Principal. "I'm just proud of the fact that we are able to provide quality summer activities."
