KSAT teacher awarded Toyota Tapestry and NEA grants

Russell Claughton, Krueger School of Applied Technologies (KSAT) applied aerospace/rocketry teacher, received the Toyota Tapestry grant for $9,800 and a National Education Association (NEA) grant for $5,000. These grants will be used to develop a new Ozone Sensing High Powered Rocketry program that integrates environmental science with math & engineering,

The original idea came from his award-winning Student Launch Initiative rocket design that students will fly at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center this week.

"Toyota is a real community partner that has enabled Mr. Claughton to expand his experiential learning project to another group of KSAT students," said Scott Rogers, Magnet School director. "Students truly get to apply their core subjects to a relevant project that challenges them to identify a problem and propose solutions. Mr. Claughton continuously shows his dedication to his students and the KSAT program by seeking additional funding for incredible student-centered projects."
