NEISD teachers receive H-E-B grants

Several North East ISD teachers received a grant from H-E-B to use toward their continuing education efforts. The grants are funded by H-E-B's new education initiative program The Trust for Teacher Excellence.  This is a one million dollar grant program designed to encourage classroom enrichment through continuing teacher education among Bexar County educators.  North East teachers have been awarded the following:

Barbara Alvarado, music teacher at Royal Ridge: $5,000
Cipriano Mendez, DATA teacher: $1,000
Hope Mendez, art teacher at Lee: $2,000
Lindsey Perret, English teacher at the International School of the Americas: $2,300
Leigh Anne Roeber, lead music specialist at Royal Ridge: $625
Bernadette Serbantez, fifth-grade teacher at Ridgeview: $1,500
Clark Stevens, theatre director at Churchill: $1,100
Terri Strode, kindergarten teacher at Hidden Forest: $4,000
Terri Toporcer, special education teacher at Roosevelt: $2,790
Lacey Treviño, art teacher at Harris: $5,000

The recipients were each selected through an application process.  Strode will use the grant money to complete her coursework and certification to become a librarian, while Serbantez will use the funding to attend The National Convention of Differentiated Instruction in Las Vegas this summer. Stevens will use his grant to attend The Voice and Speech Trainers Association convention and workshop, Perret will use her grant toward a Spanish emersion program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Toporcer will attend the State Autism conference in Corpus Christi on her grant money.  Alvarado and Treviño will both apply their grant money toward master's degree programs, while Roeber will attend the Orff level 1 training course at Trinity University this summer.

A team grant of $5,000 has been awarded to the following first-grade teachers at Northern Hills Elementary: Lori Armstrong, Carol Blaschke, Jane Hollingsworth, Joan Kraussman, Sherra McClelland, Linda Nolder, and Susan Ulrich . The team plans to use the grant to fund their trip to the National Core Knowledge Convention in Washington D.C. in February.

Another team grant was awarded to the following three Roosevelt art teachers in the amount of $1,700: Susan Ferris, Janie Smith, and Melissa Wittman.  They will use their funding to attend an AP summer training conference.

To apply for the grant, eligible applicants were required to be a full-time kindergarten through twelfth-grade teacher in Bexar County, have taught for at least three years, be at least three years from retirement, and have plans to pursue a master's degree, or attend continuing education conferences or workshops.

H-E-B gives more than two million dollars annually to fund Texas education initiatives. “This program is really about making an investment in the future of San Antonio,” said Kate Rogers, director of the H-E-B Trust for Teacher Excellence Grant Program. “Teachers who are able to pursue their goals of continuing education are more fulfilled personally and professionally."

The program is also H-E-B’s gift to the City of San Antonio in honor of its 100th anniversary.
