Churchill student awarded by Education in Action

Churchill High School student Charles Bimler was awarded at the Education in Action's Texas Independence Day recognition ceremony for his "Thanks in Giving" service project, in which he raised $1,500 for the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) Fisher House. He was given a certificate for his dedication to developing leadership skills and service to the community.

"I never really knew how much the soldiers gave for us until I visited the BAMC Fisher House," said Bimler. "I can now see and understand their sacrifices and understand what they go through to provide our freedoms."

Bimler also created a United States flag using small red and white squares on which donors wrote messages and drew pictures for the wounded soldiers. The flag is displayed for the current 48 recuperating soldiers, as well as future soldiers who will reside there.

Bimler attended Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy. Upon completion, he was named a member of its alumni program, the Lone Star Youth Leadership Council. Through the council, he created "Thanks in Giving" as his community service project.

Education in Action is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower young Texans to be informed and active leaders in their communities. Bimler was one of 124 young student leaders recognized throughout the state.
