Tejeda theatre presents Once On This Island
EVENT: Once On This Island musical production
DATE: May 22
TIME: 6:30 p.m.
LOCATION: Cafetorium, Tejeda Middle School, 2909 E. Evans Rd.

The Tejeda Middle School Theatre department will present its spring musical production, Once On This Island on May 22, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the school's cafetorium. This musical, which opened on Broadway in 1990, received eight Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical and Best Score.

Taking place on a Caribbean Island divided by social prejudice, the show features a calypso-flavored score, lively choreography, and outstandingly brilliant costumes which incorporate the rich and colorful island traditions. Once On This Island is the story of Ti Moune, a poor peasant girl, who falls in love with Daniel, an upper class boy from across the island. The four gods of Love, Earth, Water and Death allow the lives of the young lovers to intersect, and send Ti Moune on the fateful journey that tests the strength of her love. Seventy Theatre Arts seventh- and eighth-graders are participating as cast and crew to deliver melody, love and joy in this musical production directed by Veronica Pena-Montalvo.

The school will host two student shows during the school day on May 21 for sixth-grade and May 22 for seventh- and eighth-grade. Ticket sales for students begin on May 20 during lunch. Tickets for the general public will be sold at the door before the performance. The musical is approximately 60 minutes long, with no intermission, and tickets are $2 per student and $3 per adult.

Proceeds from the production goes toward the Drama Student Activity Fund whose mission is to build an inclusive community that fosters self-confidence and positive social behavior in Tejeda's Middle School Theatre students through meaningful production projects, competitive speech activities and opportunities for leadership development. For more information, contact the school at (210) 482-2260.
