EVENT: Stahl students send signatures to space
DATE: May 16
TIME: 8:30 a.m.
LOCATION: Stahl ES, 5252 Stahl Rd.
More than 1,000 students at Stahl Elementary School will join with more than 500 other schools around the world to celebrate Space Day 2008 by signing Student Signatures in Space® posters. Students will also participate in several space-theme lesson plans as well as school-wide activities, which begin at 8:30 a.m. with a rocket launch.
Third-graders have integrated geometry and forces to build paper rockets, while parents and teachers have worked to build rocket launchers. Students will time how long the rockets stay in the air.
"It's a thrilling event for our third-graders," said Pita Canales, school principal. "The whole school loves to watch the rockets blast off."
Stahl's Space Day will feature other grade-level activities, costumes and ice-cream. The ultimate goal of Space Day is to promote math, science, technology and engineering education.
The signature poster will travel to space through a designated Space Shuttle mission. Once the poster returns to earth, it will be given to the school for permanent display along with a flight certificate and picture of the crew that carried the signatures into space.
