EVENT: S.T.E.M. Academy hosts back-to-school camp
DATE: Aug. 7-8
TIME: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
LOCATION: Nimitz MS, 5426 Blanco Rd.
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) Academy, the newest magnet program of North East ISD, will host a back-to-school camp. Close to 120 incoming sixth-graders, faculty and staff will participate in the camp August 7 - 8, 2008, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day at Nimitz Middle School.
Participating students will attend this school orientation camp to prepare for the 2008-2009 school year. The camp is designed to welcome and orient new students to the school, and train them in "Stephen Covey's 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens." Students will meet administrators and teachers, participate in teams to complete engineering, science and math problem-solving activities, and receive their Covey agendas for the year.
Students at S.T.E.M. will be in small, team-building sessions working on various design tasks. Students will work together to design and build an air-propelled car using the limited materials provided. Teams will improve upon their designs by identifying and changing a variable. To help explore buoyant force, students will also design and create "flinkers" out of various objects. Flinkers neither sink nor float, they just "flink" around in the middle.
The S.T.E.M Academy, created in 2007 through a $750,000 grant to the district, will start its second year with a sixth- and seventh-grade class at Nimitz Middle School and a ninth- and tenth-grade class at Lee High School. S.T.E.M is a college-preparatory magnet program based on innovative mathematics and science instruction.
