Hardy Oak holds third annual Battle of the Books
EVENT: Hardy Oak holds third annual Battle of the Books
DATE: May 8 - 9
TIME: varies
LOCATION: Hardy Oak ES, 22900 Hardy Oak Blvd.

Hardy Oak Elementary School will conduct its third annual Battle of the Books competition this week where third-, fourth- and fifth-graders have been challenged by their librarian Jo Chasse to read a set number of books.  On Thursday, May 8, Hardy Oak third-graders will compete in their Battle at 9 a.m. On Friday, May 9, fourth-graders will compete in their Battle at 8:30 a.m. and the fifth-graders will compete at 1:30 p.m.

Students were encouraged to read a set number of award-winning books as possible by May 1 (the number of books varies by grade level). The students read the books throughout the school year and were instructed to keep a reading log to write down important details from the book.

All students then took a Qualifying Test on May 2. The top four scorers on the test in each class will make up that class' Battle Team. All questions on the Qualifying Test and on the School Battle are either author or title questions and reflect details in the books.

On the day of the battle, students from each class will sit on the stage to answer questions about the book. Title questions are worth four points and author questions are worth two points in the first round, three points in the second round and five points in the third round. The team with the most points at the end of the battle wins.

All students will receive participation ribbons and the winners of each competition will receive trophies.

The Battle of the Books is a reading enrichment program designed to encourage recreational reading, offer a variety of literature, increase familiarity with different authors and share books through written and oral expression. The Battle has been widely used across the United States and can be traced back to a public radio program in Chicago during the 1940's.
