Second Grade Curriculum
| Language Arts | Math |
| Our Language Arts curriculum is administered through the Four Blocks Framework and Six Traits Writing Program. Throughout the year each child’s goal will be to read grade level text (fiction and non-fiction), develop fluency and comprehension. Work towards recognizing a large number of words and use a variety of word identification strategies. They will develop summarization skills and learn how to recall facts. They will be exposed to a variety of genres (fairy tales, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, etc.) and learn how to utilize reference materials. As writers, they will develop their revision and editing skills and gain increasing control of their penmanship. Through the use of a word wall and related strategies, the students will become more consistent with their spelling of high-frequency words. | Our Math program is guided by TERC Investigations in conjunction with our Math Text. TERC uses a hands-on teaching approach. Throughout the year, the students will add and subtract and compare and order numbers. They will use measurement processes such as: length, capacity, weight, time, and temperature. Review names/values of coins and count money to determine the total amount. Other areas addressed are: geometry and statistics. |
| Science | Social Studies |
| Students will learn to identify parts and processes of the natural world, observe melting and evaporation through experiments, observe, chart, and graph changes in weather and how it affects them, determine changes in motion, and distinguish between living and non-living objects. They will compare the needs of plants and animals and determine what happens when those needs are not met. | Students will create timelines at various times in the year to help develop their concept of time and chronology. Through the use of a calendar students will acquire past, present, and future time frames. They will identify parts and functions of our government. Develop appreciation/respect for customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs. Understand the roles of consumers and producers and how they affect our economy. Develop map and globe skills. Gain an understanding of the relationship between physical environment and human activities. |
