Kindergarten Curriculum

Language Arts Math
Pinnell/Fountas Phonics Program. This is the core of our Kindergarten Program. The first 9 weeks we focus on letter knowledge, learning how to listen and respond to stories, rhymes, conversations, discussions and one and two- step instructions. Students will know that print is read and written left to right and top to bottom. They will need to understand that written words are a sequence of letters separated by spaces. Students will also learn the different parts of a book. These are just a few skills that are taught during the first 9 weeks.  We teach these skills during our opening in the morning, Literacy Centers, Phonics lessons, Building Block time and Learning Centers.  To support your child at home you should have your child listen to you read daily, have them answer questions you ask, sing songs and rhymes, talk about letters and words around you example: McDonalds, HEB, Walmart. Draw and create with pencils, crayons, paper, and scissors. Play letter games with magnetic letters on the refrigerator. TERC Math Investigations guides the Kindergarten math program. It is a hands on approach which is developmentally appropriate for 5 & 6 year olds. Problem solving and logical thinking are key elements. Continuing threads are whole number, measurement, & geometry.  The first 9 weeks, our focus will be patterns & beginning geometry. Students’ first task will be to become aware of patterns & shapes in our world. Then, they will create their own patterns with shapes & colors using a variety of manipulatives.

Science Social Studies
In Kindergarten, science introduces the use of simple classroom and field investigations. Students will identify, observe, group and explore during these units of study.

1. Me and My World

2.  Patterns of Change

3.  Natural Resources and Basic Needs

4.  Animals

5.  Plants

The first 9 weeks, our focus will be on me and my world and patterns of change. This includes the understanding that humans have the same basic characteristics, although their outsides differ. They will use their senses to observe size, shape, color and height. Students will also learn about weather, the seasons and day and night. Science is a hands-on subject of study and is one of the core elements of your child’s education.

Kindergarten Social Studies focuses on citizenship and economics this first nine weeks.  The knowledge and skills to be taught are:

understanding of important customs,    symbols, and celebrations that         represent American beliefs and principles

purpose of rules

role of authority figures

how to communicate in oral and visual forms

concept of location

 basic human needs

 importance of jobs.

   The children are expected to:

recite the Pledge of Allegiance

identify purposes for having rules to provide order, safety, and security in home and school

identify the role of authority figures in home, school, and community

communicate in oral and visual forms (know full name, birthday, address, and phone number)
