Fourth Grade Curriculum
| Reading | Language Arts |
| We explore a variety of fiction and
nonfiction selections with the goal of every fourth grade student
becoming an independent reader. We stress the things that good readers
do: predicting, making connections with previous information, attending to
vocabulary when necessary, reading for a purpose, and showing what we
like or dislike about how the author developed the story. Fourth grade takes the reading TAKS in April.
|
Proofreading and editing skills in spelling, capitalization, English usage, and sentence structure will be stressed. Students will be responsible for learning the six-traits for good writing. Fourth grade takes the writing TAKS in February. |

Math |
Science |
|
In math, the focal points will be multiplication and division, as well as learning more about fractions, decimals, congruency and symmetry, with emphasis throughout on problem solving. Fourth grade takes the Math TAKS in April. |
Fourth grade science includes both life science and physical science. Students use text and investigations as they follow and implement the Scientific Process. Topics include weather, animal groups and survival, water and the water cycle, geology and matter. Students will be expected to complete a science project which may require work to be done at home.

| Social Studies | Homework |
|
The Social Studies curriculum focuses on Texas History and Geography. Students will participate in oral presentations, as well as individual and group projects. We will also schedule two field trips to broaden our knowledge of Texas history.
|
The students are responsible for writing daily assignments in their agenda booklet. Homework folders will be sent home on Monday and need to be completed and returned on Friday of the same week. Additional assignments may include unfinished class work, studying for tests/quizzes, and reinforcement as needed in math and/or reading.
|
Absences/Make-up Work
Please send a note with your child upon their return from an absence. Students will be given two days for each day missed to complete all make-up assignments. It is the student's responsibility to inquire about any missed work.
Conferences
A conference will be scheduled with each child's parent at the end of the first six weeks. If you have any concerns or questions before that time, please feel free to drop us a note or call the office (650-1550) for a conference. Our conference time is 10:20 - 11:10a.m. daily and afternoons after school is dismissed. It is important that we work as a team to provide your child with the best education possible.
Location
Since we are in portables, every student needs to keep an umbrella or rain poncho at school for those rainy days! Also, students will want to bring a water bottle for some quick sips of cool water on those hot, dry, summery days.
