First Grade Curriculum
| Language Arts | Math |
We use the Four Blocks Framework and Six Traits Writing for our literacy program at Oak Grove. In first grade, students will move from print awareness and letter sound correspondence to reading and writing with fluency, expression and comprehension. We will review and add on to the list of 'popcorn words' they learned in Kindergarten, using our Word Wall. Students will be exposed to multicultural fiction and nonfiction books at their reading level to support their success. We well also explore different types of publications such as magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and menus. Students will learn to organize their ideas before they write. They will write fluently and creatively with voice. |
TERC Investigations guides our math program. TERC uses a hands on approach to teaching and learning math. Students are actively involved in problem solving, as well as reasoning and explaining their answers. A few areas we will be addressing throughout the year are: reading, writing, comparing and ordering whole numbers to 99, identifying the names/values of coins, addition facts to 18, subtraction, non-standard measurement of length, capacity and weight, time to the hour and half hour, skip counting, 2 and 3-dimensional shapes, surveys, bar graphs and pictographs, and problem solving models. |

| In first grade, students will learn about rocks, soil, and natural resources. They will observe how nature changes and what causes those changes such as temperature, weather and seasons. We will be charting and graphing the weather, planting seeds, exploring forces and motion, observing and identifying rocks and soil using microscopes and hand lenses. We will identify basic needs of living things, explore ways that living things depend on each other, and separate living organisms and nonliving things into groups. Students will be engaged in hands on activities where they can actually see changes happen! | Throughout the year students will be involved in 4 major areas of study. These include, Citizenship and Government in Our Community, Cultures of Our Community, Our World and Changes in Our World. We will learn and practice what it means to be good citizens. We will be learning about history and historical figures such Clara Barton, Nathan Hale, Eleanor Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, and Martin Luther King, Jr. We will be learning about different cultures and how they helped shape our beliefs, customs and celebrations. We will study maps, areas of land and bodies of water. We will explore technology and how it has changed our lives. |
