We have lots of special things happening at Northwood.  Scroll down for info on ALE, PPCD, and Infant VI classes, PE and Music classes, GT classes, Reading Intervention, Resource and Speech classes.

ALE AND INFANT VI
Alternative Learning Environment commonly known as A.L.E. is one of the many special education programs at Northwood Elementary School. These children work on functional reading and math skills. In addition to working on these skills, they work on "life" skills. These life skills fall into various domains- domestic, recreation-leisure, community, and  (pre-)vocational. Some of the classes practice their cooking and cleaning skills in the apartment; go into the community to practice riding the VIA bus for transportation, and to purchase items; and do "jobs" for various teachers, the PTA, and the office to practice their vocational skills. The classes are very busy.

The Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities-Visually Impaired Infant Program is another program at Northwood. This program serves infants from birth to three with serious visual problems who require the services of a teacher of the visually impaired to develop optimally. Home visits, consultation to daycare, a classroom, parent training and a parent support group are all provided.

(If you have a child in NEISD who has a serious visual problem after correction, you  will be referred you to the ECI (infant program). They will need an eye doctor report to help determine if the child qualifies for service. She will complete a Learning Media Assessment. The ECI program will assess your child. A meeting (IFSP) will be held to determine eligibility.)

Gifted & Talented

Michelle Wallish, Instructor

Gifted students need a qualitatively differentiated program that is advanced, complex, and in-depth.  The core purpose of the G/T program is to facilitate the optimal development of each student’s intellectual and creative gifts and talents.  This optimal development includes…

*producing the highest level of adaptive problem solvers and perceptive thinkers

*creating highly effective communicators

*guiding learners to be focused and self-directed

*creating self-actualizing citizens

*nurturing in-depth interpersonal and interpersonal potential

In order to guide G/T students in the development of their potential, a trained teacher provides an experience that includes an accelerated curriculum and enrichment strategies that are process, content, and product oriented in a stimulating and nurturing environment.

*Students are identified as gifted in grades K-5.
