Notes from the Northern Hills Clinic

Welcome to another year at Northern Hills. I would like to address some of our clinic procedures and help you understand what I, as a registered nurse, do on an elementary campus.  The following are some of my goals:

bullet

Promote a healthy lifestyle through example and educational opportunities.

bullet

Conduct screenings which include hearing and vision for kinder, first, third, and fifth graders; Acanthosis Nigricans screening for first, third and fifth graders; scoliosis screening for fifth graders; and heights and weights on all students.

bullet

Provide specialized health care for students with a variety of needs.

bullet

Serve as a medical/health resource for faculty, parents, and students.

bullet

Evaluate and monitor communicable diseases, implementing strategies to prevent their spread.

bullet

Conduct health related classroom instruction, following district policies, on maturation and AIDS for eligible fourth and fifth grade students who have parental permission. Other topics might include nutrition, hygiene, dental health and universal precautions as it relates to blood borne pathogens.

The safety and well being of your children is my main focus. Please carefully read the following information to avoid confusion at a later date.

NUTRITION -All students need to eat breakfast before the school day begins whether that be at home or here in the cafeteria at school.  Please have your child in line for breakfast NO LATER than 7:50am, or they will not be served.  Many of the children I see in the clinic during the morning hours are complaining of stomach as well as headaches because they have come to school without eating.  They are not ready to learn.

MEDICATION -NEISD protocol states that all medication intended for the students shall be kept in the school clinic. Medication must be brought to school by a parent or other responsible adult. Under no circumstances is a child allowed to transport medication.  It must be in the original container, and will be administered only in accordance with the instructions on the label or a doctor's written request. It is helpful if parents request a "school bottle" from the pharmacy and bring only the amount of medication needed for school administration.  No herbal or homeopathic preparations can be accepted.

ILLNESS - Children are to be free of fever and communicable disease in order to attend school. They may not attend school with active head lice or nits (eggs) within 1/4" of the scalp. Should your child develop a fever (100.4 or above), symptoms of a communicable disease, or sustain an injury at school, you will receive a call to pick up your child from us in the clinic. We have very limited space, so please make every effort to come for your child ASAP.

KINDER - Because of the excitement of starting school and a change in routine, we have many children who have "accidents" and are sent to us in the clinic. This unfortunately with many first graders as well. PLEASE make certain your child has a clean, dry change of clothing in their backpack every day.  This will allow your child to return to class quickly, as well as saving you a trip to school.  Our "Northern  Hills Boutique" is very limited.

INJURY - Should any injury occur at school, first aid will be administered. Parents will be notified if further medical attention is recommended, and also for ANY injury occurring to the eye or head. PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN YOUR  CONTACT NUMBERS ON YOUR CHILD'S EMERGENCY CARD ARE CURRENT, AND THAT YOU LIST AN ALTERNATE ADULT WHO COULD PICK UP YOUR CHILD IN THE EVENT YOU ARE NOT AVAILABLE. If an injury occurs at home, please care for the child at home or seek medical attention before sending him/her to school. We do not have a physician on campus.

IMMUNIZATIONS - If you receive a notification that immunizations are due during the school year, please comply promptly.  Bring your child's record to school so that we can make a copy and get the information into the computer, and your child off the delinquent list.  Texas law requires all students to be fully immunized...as does NEISD. "No shots, no school, no kidding!"

If you have concerns or questions, please feel free to call me at 650-1480.  I look forward to working with you and caring for your children.

Sincerely,
Diane Tinseth, RN,BSN, School Nurse
