| NESA poets and
writers explore the limits of language, experimenting with
and mastering traditional and contemporary literary forms,
including poetry, fiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and
creative non-fiction. Readings range from Gilgamesh
to the latest literary magazines.Students write and revise
daily, and present public readings every six weeks.Our
writers submit and publish throughout their high school
careers. |

Creativity and professionalism are
stressed. The NESA creative writing major is one of the
only four-year programs in this field offered in the
United States.Creative Writing majors will have an eclectic experience in
writing, including poetry, fiction, creative-nonfiction,
screenplays, and plays.
Coursework for Creative Writing will include the
following:
- Experimentation with language to describe divergent and
metaphoric thoughts
- Devices of sound, line, imagery, diction, tone, and voice,
as well as with the various shapes and forms of poetry and
fiction
- Exploration of characterization, principles of momentum, and
tension
- Major writerly concerns in all genres
Writing workshop formats
characterize the courses as
students:
- complete writing exercises
- read work aloud and benefit from critiques as part of the
revision and publication process
- submit portfolios for critique and evaluation
- meet and learn from respected and successful literary
artists
- read and study both contemporary and classic works in all
literary genres.
- share their work with the public in Black Box Theatre
