Students learn about the history and function of cinema and animation, film production techniques, film scripting, and composition, and actually produce works for presentation in national-level competitions.  Advanced students research, write, direct, and edit documentaries, fiction films, and animation pieces.  Cinema offers a comprehensive hands-on experience for students on the art and science of this collaborative art.

Coursework for Cinema majors will include the following:
  • The history and function of cinema and animation, the laws and ethical considerations effecting cinema and animation, the impact of film on society, the production of animation and film, and film script composition.
  • Production techniques; the role of media audience in film production considerations; analysis of film with scripting, composition, and production techniques as central concerns; and careers in animation and film.
  • Opportunities to write for cinema and animation, screenplays, and non-fiction productions; overview of writing styles and genres.
  • Advanced students will study documentary styles and work on non-fiction productions. Students will be expected to direct, edit, write, and research a documentary.

Anne Dunckel’s piece “Winter Fun Time” screened at the IFP/Los Angeles Film Festival in July 2004. The prestigious festival is co-chaired by Samuel L. Jackson and Halle Berry. NESA Cinema alumni Antonio Cisneros won two 2004 ARTS Award Merit Awards-- one for Film/Video Production and one for Photography.
 
NESA Cinema had a strong showing at the New Vistas Festival in January of 2004. Cinema had two second place winners and two first place winners, and we came back with $2400 in scholarships.
