English I

Required for all freshmen, English I is composed of six thematic units designed as  the basis of a year-long series of reading and writing workshops.  Each unit covers reading skills, writing skills, oral communication skills, research as a process, and language skills.  Art, music, and technology are integrated into the units of study.

English I Honors

English I Honors is a specialized course in which the English I curriculum is covered at a faster pace and in more depth.  Added to the core curriculum are word attack skills, including vocabulary from context; comprehension skills based on logic and inference; study and listening skills; composition skills leading to the development of sequential paragraphs on a given topic for a variety of purposes and audiences; and literary analysis skills approached through creative interaction with ideas.

 

English II

Required for all sophomores, English II is the second half of a two-year series of thematic reading, writing, and thinking workshops.  Language skills to be targeted are: clauses, sentence structure, subject/verb agreement, verb tense, mechanics, and sentence combining.

English II Honors

This course covers the sophomore curriculum at  faster pace and in more depth.  Added to the curriculum are advanced grammar and usage skills, vocabulary study including antonyms and analogies, development of the complete composition from a thesis statement, and more intensive literary analysis including satire and classical literature.  Students are encouraged to develop the higher cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

 

English III

This course is required of all students during the eleventh grade year.  English III students read extensively in multiple genres from American and other world literature.  The course may involve study of these philosophical movements in America: Puritanism, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Determinism, Naturalism, Realism, and Existentialism.  Throughout the course, students will be instructed in literature/reading, composition, language/logic, and oral communication.  In addition, the course examines all aspects of research as a discovery process and extends research to technical writing.  English III students are expected to plan, draft, revise, and complete written compositions in a variety of forms.

English III AP

Advanced Placement courses combine the guidelines of the College Board AP Courses with an enrichment and enlargement of the curriculum.

 

English IV

This English course is required of all students during the twelfth grade year.  English IV students read extensively in multiple genres from British and other world literature.  The course may include the study of these periods from British literature: the Old English period, Medieval period, English Renaissance, 17th and 18th centuries, Romantic period, Victorian period, and the Postmodern period.  Throughout the course, students will be instructed in in literature/reading, composition, language/logic, and oral communication.  English IV students are expected to plan, draft, revise, and complete written compositions in  variety of forms.

English IV AP
