MacArthur Mathematics Department

Statement of Philosophy

The role of the mathematics department is to develop a state of the art mathematics program that is challenging, exciting, and driven by student needs. Students will acquire the skills needed to prepare for future mathematics courses and to meet the challenges encountered after high school. Many of the future career decisions will be linked to the educational preparation provided by their high school curriculum.

The State of Texas requires 3 credits of mathematics for graduation. The mathematics department encourages students to take mathematics all four years of high school to better prepare for future success either in college or in the work force. Many of our students take two or sometimes more math courses during their junior and senior years in order to take advantage of all the unique courses available at MacArthur. This includes preparing to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses and Dual Credit courses. Students also have the opportunity to accelerate through the regular sequence of courses by attending summer school that allows them to move to the honors course sequence.

Mathematics and science are strongly linked therefore students should coordinate the level of mathematics taken with the science courses selected. Students are encouraged to continue in the science program as well as mathematics so that they have many options available to them after high school.

The instructional staff provides experience with the latest math technology and utilizes a variety of techniques in presenting curriculum. Parents and students are encouraged to consult with the mathematics department about any questions regarding course selections. Please review the Regular, Honors/Accelerated Regular, Gifted and Talented course selection options as well as the Course Descriptions on this web page.
