Sprachfest Regional German Contest is sponsored by the MacArthur German Program. It is held annually on the first Saturday in February on the campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio under the direction of the UTSA German Program led by Dr. Christopher Wickham with assikstance from the students at UTSA. The contest began in 1976 on the MacArthur campus. 2006 German Culture Team wins First Place Again at State Kevin Boeck, MacArthur Senior, led his team to a First Place win on Saturday, Feb 25 at the Texas State German Contest in Austin. It was an unprecedented second time for the team to place First. Since the competition began in 1982, no other team has ever won first place two years in a row. The "Pass Auf" culture team competition is somewhat like team Jeopardy. The questions include anything about any aspect of all the German-speaking countries; such as history, art, music, proverbs, grammar, current events, German-Americans and sports. Mac beat Austin Bowie in the final round, after earlier defeating Kingwood and Westwood. Other members of the team are: Alan (sophomore), Preston Grimes (junior), Michael (sophomore), and Eric (junior). Kevin won second place in the 4th level culture test and Eric won 5th in the 2nd level culture test. 2005 Mac Winners MacArthur German students won 3rd place sweepstakes at the 2005 Sprachfest held February 6 at the UTSA. 36 students qualified for the state contest to be held in Austin on February 26. Special thanks go to Ms Haase and Ms Drescher, Mac Exchange teachers, and to Benedikt Wimmer, a German exchange student, for judging at the contest. Very special thanks go also to Ms Boeck and Ms Wright, our German Club Mothers, for making goodie bags and for helping us out so much! First Place Winners Individuals: Jay, Kevin Boeck, Eric, Axel, Alex Awe Varsity Pass Auf Culture Team: Kevin Boeck, Amy Butler, Alaina Leal, Axel, and Jessica Second Year Skit: Todd Richardson, Alaina Leal, Sage Houser, Jeremy Gold, Candy De la Cruz, and , who was named Best Actress Second Place Winners Individuals: David, Duet Acting: David Novak & Gage Third Year Skit: James Dungan, Ally, David, and 3 others , including Best Actor Novice Culture Team: Alan, Madeleine Schurmann, Michael, Eric, and Preston Grimes Third Place Winners Second Year Duet Acting Fourth Year Skit Scavenger Hunt Team Three other students qualified for the state contest, and six other students contributed sweepstakes points to the team total. The Texas State German Contest is an annual event on the campus of Baylor University on the last Saturday in February. It is sponsored by the MacArthur German Program and the German Faculty of Baylor University, led by Dr. Janya Martin. This contest includes the top five winners in all categories from the regional contests in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.
