MacArthur student nominated as 2006 Presidential Scholar

Rafael Moras, from MacArthur High School, has been nominated as a 2006 Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He was selected for his exceptional tenor voice. Up to 20 candidates will be selected as Presidential Scholars in the Arts, which will be announced in May. If chosen as a Presidential Scholar, Moras will perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Moras recently participated in the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) Week 2006 in Miami, Fla., where he learned of his Presidential Scholar nomination and received a Silver Award. The Gold and Silver award winners are being flown to New York City for an all-expenses-paid performance and celebration to be held at the Baryshnikov Arts Center on April 24, 2006. For more information about NFAA or the ARTS program, visit the organization's Web site at www.nfaa.org.

In 2006, Rafael starred as Tony in the Mac Fine Arts Dept production of West Side Story.

UPDATE: HBO recently did a documentary on Placido Domingo, the maestro of the Washington National Opera. The purpose of this movie was to show off Masters and their Proteges. Rafael was followed for several days by an HBO film crew as Maestro Domingo's protege! We will update you when we know the air date of the documentary. We are so proud of Rafael!
