ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEMS COOP 8412 (3 credits) For Juniors and Seniors at least 16 Years of Age
This coop course is a "work based" educational experience. The teacher and your employer cooperate in providing the best opportunity for students to learn about business by being on a real job while you earn credits toward your high school graduation. Students are paid for their employment.
The teacher assists the students in locating appropriate business offices in which to work. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the job. Once the student is hired, the supervisor in that business will be responsible for training him or her to successfully perform the assigned tasks. The kinds of businesses frequently providing such training include banks, mortgage companies, doctors and attorneys, insurance agencies, and various credit and bookkeeping and marketing offices within a variety of companies. Your teacher will periodically visit your job site for consultations with you and your supervisor. The student receives the benefits of getting experience in specific job skills and technical knowledge.
The coop students meet in one of the class periods for classroom instruction directed toward preparing for success din the working environment. The combination of class work and job site work allows the students to earn 3 credits toward graduation requirements.
Classroom activities include computer applications in word processing, spreadsheets, data processing, and desktop publishing. In addition, other business skills may include filing, office organization, employee and employer responsibilities, and general office procedures common to most offices.
The wages earned by the student may be applied toward college or personal needs. The program allows students to apply both academic and occupational skills in a meaningful way, thus helping students meet their goals of attaining successful careers in their chosen fields.
BUSINESS COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS 8407 (1 Credit) Prerequisite: Keyboarding
This course is designed to provide students with a broad experience in computer applications for business usage in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and desktop publishing. Students are trained in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Access, and graphics, in addition to other programs introduced as needed.Students should become proficient in the preparation of business and personal letters, memorandums, reports, income statements, payrolls, merging of documents and integration, and newsletters. This course will provide a background for students to build on for either business entry or college usage or personal applications.
Credit in this course meets the computer literacy requirement for graduation.
OFFICE PROCEDURES 8413 (1/2 credit per semester) Junior or Senior Grade Level
Requires Administrative Approval Students enrolled in this course will receive experience in an office setting by being assigned to work in one of the campus business offices. Students can learn the requirements for employees in this setting and learn tasks frequently used in business. In addition, students are required to attend a training session at lunch once each six weeks given by the course instructor. A homework assignment is given once each grading period with additional information in business offices.
KEYBOARDING
Students are taught to key by touch on the computer keyboard. Skills in accuracy and speed are stressed. Some applications also taught will include business and personal letters, reports, and short documents.
The Keyboarding course will meet the requirement necessary for enrolling in the Business Computer Information Systems course which provides computer literacy credit. This course will provide the necessary skills for students to enjoy and usefully apply other software program skills for use on personal computers and for use in future computer classes in high school and college.
