Safety

Safety | FAA Guidelines | ATF Guidelines | NAR Safety Code | Risk Assessment

The safety of educators, mentors and students working on this project is very important. Every member of the team will receive a copy of NAR safety procedures and will be briefed on our safety procedures. All team members will follow the safety rules and procedures of the NAR when building, testing and flying the rocket. Kirsten Casteel is our safety officer. She will be in charge of making sure that every team member follows the safety procedures and that the team members know how to safely use all the equipment. Each team member must pass a safety test. They will be required to make a perfect score or they will not be allowed to participate in the building or testing of the rocket. The safety officer will also brief the students before every launch on safety procedures utilized during each during launch. Mrs. Tracy Thomas and Mr. William Casteel will be Kirsten's mentors. They will oversee all of her work and make sure procedures are followed. Mr. Bill Wagner, our Rocket Mentor, is a level three certified high power with NAR. He will be attending all the launches. Ray Kinsel, Launch Technician Mentor, will be providing all black powder and high power rocket motors for testing. He will be on site during rocket test at Meeks Ranch. Our safety procedures include:

  • At least two team members will be working together at all times.
  • Team members will wear safety glasses while building and testing.
  • Work gloves will be worn while using cutting tools.
  • When using CA or epoxy team members will work in a well ventilated area and gloves will be worn.
  • Electronic devices will have multiple switches to prevent accidental firing.
  • All black powder and ejection charge preparation will be handled by Ray Kinsel.
  • Students will review safety power points multiple times.
