About iMAK
Interactive Media Applications at Krueger Middle School (iMAK) is a school-within-a school magnet program located on the campus of Krueger Middle School. The inaugural sixth grade class began in 2005 and seventh and eighth grade classes will be subsequently added through 2007. The school’s curriculum is centered around media themes and involves integration of all the core subject areas. Students have the option of selecting Pre-AP or Gifted and Talented courses if they qualify.
Philosophy
iMAK challenges students to excel by providing a curriculum that is interactive,
exciting and meaningful. This middle school magnet program is unique
because students engage their technology, language arts, mathematical,
social studies and science skills to produce integrated media projects
each nine weeks. Additionally, iMAK students produce the school’s
video announcements, yearbook, student documentaries, video games, computer
animation and public service announcements. The relevant application
of learned concepts through a holistic approach, known as subject integration,
demonstrates to students that all subjects are important and their projects
bring meaning to instruction. iMAK’s program of instruction reinforces
the need for teamwork, responsibility and organization.
Structure
The Magnet School Director and KMS Assistant Principal, who report to the
campus principal, work together to lead iMAK. The Assistant Principal is
responsible for iMAK student discipline while the Magnet School Director
is responsible for instructional leadership. Each grade level consists
of a team of teachers and a Team Leader. The Team Leader works closely
with the Director and is responsible for managing the day-to-day team activities
Academic Support
The goal of each teacher and staff member at iMAK is to help students benefit
to the greatest degree possible from the magnet school program. The curriculum
and daily lessons are designed to motivate, challenge, and inform the students
and to help them become disciplined, self-guided learners. Teacher lesson
plans and homework are posted on the magnet web site so that parents can
stay informed. We are committed to monitoring each student’s progress
carefully to assure that they receive the support necessary for success.
Parents of students in need of additional academic assistance will be informed
and interventions offered according to iMAK’s Academic Intervention
Plan. Two interventions are ZAP and tutoring. The Zeros Aren't Permitted
(ZAP) program helps students
recover academically from low grades and/or missing assignments. For example,
if your child did not turn in an assignment (left it at home or forgot
to do the work, etc.), then he or she could attend an after-school ZAP
session where the grade can be made up and re-submitted to the teacher
for partial credit. Before and after school tutoring is also available
upon request along with any necessary TAKS tutoring.
Extra-curricular Activities
iMAK students compete in middle school athletics, University Interscholastic
League Academic and Fine Arts competitions and other club competitions.
The Youth Applied Technology Program (YATP)
provides a variety of after school club activities for students in all
middle school grades free of charge. Magnet school students have made significant
contributions to these programs and have been fortunate enough to have
been coached and directed by accomplished teachers.
Eligibility to Attend
iMAK recruits fifth and sixth grade students who reside in the North East
Independent School District. Students are eligible to transfer to iMAK
mid-year or after their sixth grade year.
Admission Criteria
Students who apply to iMAK are selected by lottery, however, students should
have good grades, conduct and be prepared to participate in co-curricular
media assignments in order to get the most out of the program.
Transportation
Students accepted to the Krueger Middle School magnet programs qualify
for free busing to KMS from one of the NEISD middle schools. Parents are
responsible to have students at their designated middle schools to be transported
in the morning, and then students will be returned to that middle school
after class. Please refer to the NEISD Transportation Department for specific schedules.
If the student lives within the KMS attendance area, then he or she qualifies
for traditional bus transportation to and from school if the residence
is more than 2 miles away from the campus.
