About iMAK

Interactive Media Applications at Krueger Middle School (iMAK) is a school-within-a school magnet program located on the campus of Krueger Middle School. The inaugural sixth grade class began in 2005 and seventh and eighth grade classes will be subsequently added through 2007. The school’s curriculum is centered around media themes and involves integration of all the core subject areas.

Philosophy
iMAK challenges students to excel by providing a curriculum that is interactive, exciting and meaningful. This middle school magnet program is unique because students engage their technology, language arts, mathematical, social studies and science skills to produce integrated media projects each nine weeks. Additionally, iMAK students produce the school’s video announcements, yearbook, student documentaries, video games, computer animation and public service announcements. The relevant application of learned concepts through a holistic approach, known as subject integration, demonstrates to students that all subjects are important and their projects bring meaning to instruction. iMAK’s program of instruction reinforces the need for teamwork, responsibility and organization.

Structure
The Magnet School Director who reports to the campus principal leads iMAK. The Director is responsible for iMAK instructional leadership. Each grade level consists of a team of teachers and a Team Leader. The Team Leader works closely with the Director and is responsible for managing the day-to-day team activities. A Counselor is assigned specifically to iMAK who works with the Counseling Department and the Director.

Academic Support
The goal of teachers and staff members in the magnet program is to help students benefit to the greatest degree possible from these programs. The curricula and daily lessons are designed to motivate and challenge students while guiding them to become disciplined learners. To keep the parents informed and up to date the teachers post daily homework assignments, upcoming test, and other major events on their individual webpage. The magnet programs at Krueger are committed to each student’s success, and carefully monitor all students’ progress to ensure that he or she receives necessary support.

Extra-curricular Activities
Magnet school students have opportunities to participate in University Interscholastic League, athletic, academic and fine arts programs. The Youth Applied Technology Program (YATP) provides the most extensive variety of after-school clubs for students in all middle school grades free of charge. Some of the clubs are: Robotics, Science Olympiad, Aviation, Broadcasting, Judo, Advanced Rocketry, Soccer, and Digital Animation. Students have the opportunity to compete in several local, state, and national competitions as part of the Robotics and Rocketry clubs. Magnet school students make significant contributions to these programs and are coached and directed by accomplished teachers. The KIN after school program is also available on campus for a minimal charge.

Eligibility to Attend
iMAK recruits fifth and sixth grade students who reside in the North East Independent School District. Students are eligible to transfer to iMAK mid-year or after their sixth grade year.

Admission Criteria
Students who apply to iMAK are selected by lottery; however, students must have exceptional standardized test scores, above average grades, good attendance and conduct. To have your child considered for admission to the magnet program at Krueger Middle School, you will need to complete the enclosed application and return it to your child’s counselor. Your child’s school counselor will forward the application to the Magnet School office. Students anticipating a move into NEISD need to send the application directly to Krueger Middle School.

Transportation
Students accepted to the Krueger Middle School magnet program qualify for free bussing to KMS from one of the NEISD middle schools. Parents are responsible for having their children at their designated middle schools, where a bus will shuttle them to KMS in the mornings and then back to the home middle school in the afternoons. Please refer to the NEISD Transportation Department for specific schedules. If the student lives within the KMS attendance area and more than two miles away from the campus, then he or she qualifies for traditional bus transportation.

For more information about admissions, please contact the iMAK counselor, Manuel Contreras at 210-650-1350 or by e-mail.
