Overview| Math | Reading | Science | Social Studies | Rocketry | English |Rubric
Overview
During the nine weeks period, students will build and learn about various bridges and their unique structures.
Math
For the Math portion of this project, company architects and carpenters will submit a scale drawing of their land to check for correct measurements (checkpoint one). Checkpoint two: Accountants will submit their company’s balance sheet for verification and accuracy.
Reading
For the Reading portion of this project, students will use the school library to research a bridge and the inventor of the bridge. Reading classes will visit the library and write notes to help guide the research process. Checkpoint 1 is top of citation skeleton completed. Checkpoint 2 is one complete citation skeleton.
Science
For the Science portion of this project, students will be put into companies and choose jobs. Each company will work together to create a bridge. They will have a budget to purchase supplies and forms to keep records. Using specific parameters, companies will build a toothpick bridge. The bridge will then go through a stress test. Weights will be hung from the middle of the bridge to test its strength. Checkpoint 1: Company audit for all job positions, Checkpoint 2: Bridge Construction/ Tests
Social Studies
For the Social Studies portion of this project, students will be given an area of the world where they will need to construct a bridge. Checkpoint 1 will consist of the research needed to create a PowerPoint presentation explaining which type of bridge they would build, including pictures, the materials they will use and the methods they would use to construct the bridge. Checkpoint 2 will be the presentation itself.
Rocketry and Aviation
For the ARA portion of this project, students will each construct their own Delta Dart glider. These gliders are propelled by a rubber band and built using fine motor skills. Data will be collected and analyzed. We will also review the structures of previous vehicles made this year and compare/contrast them.
English
For the English portion of this project, students will read about the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and write a variety of poems about the event. Checkpoint one is the first three poems. Checkpoint two is the last two poems.
