Unit 3: Integrated Project - Big Bertha
Overview | English | Math | Reading | Science | Social Studies | Technology | Rubric
Overview
For the English portion of this project, students will write a friendly letter to their parents inviting them to attend the rocket launch. Checkpoint 1 will be an envelope addressed to their parents. Checkpoint 2 will be the rough draft of the letter.
English
For the English portion of this project, students will write a narrative about their rocket launch experience. Checkpoint 1 will be the outline and checkpoint two will be the rough draft.
Math
For the Math portion, based on the data collected from the rocket launch, students will determine “usable” angles from each tracking station and then find the average angle of each station. Using the ratios of each angle and a given formula, students will calculate the altitude of their rocket in feet rounded to the nearest tenth. Checkpoint 1 will be an example of rocket altitude calculations based on sample angle data. Checkpoint 2 will be the student’s actual rocket altitude calculations based on their individual data from the rocket launch.
Reading
For the Reading portion of this project, students will research an astronaut or pilot. Each student will create a Tri-Venn Diagram (3 circles) to compare and contrast the three rockets built this year in Applied Rocketry and Aviation class. Any type of poster board or paper may be used. Please use dimensions larger than 8 ½ inches X 11 inches. Checkpoint 1 will be three circles labeled with the name of each rocket and one piece of information in each circle. Checkpoint 2 will be 5 pieces of information written in each circle
Science For the Science portion, students will research the effects of lift-off/ G-Force on the human body. Each student will create a presentation on their findings, to include graphs, info on current research, effects, pictures, and works cited. Checkpoint 1 will be Research Notes, Checkpoint 2 will be a PPT Slide Show, and the Final Project will be a Scientific Report.
Social Studies
For the Social Studies portion of this project, students will research the history of NASA and the history of flight in groups. Checkpoint 1 will be the research notes taken. Checkpoint 2 will consist of a group Movie Maker project and will be created with specific instructions. The group will then present their Movie Maker to the class.
