Description: This course is designed to introduce students to chemistry at the TEKS level and includes abstract and quantitative aspects of chemistry. Technology is incorporated as appropriate to support the study of specific topics. Chemistry is the study of the structure, composition and behavior of matter. Students study a variety of topics that include: characteristics of matter; energy transformations during physical and chemical changes; atomic structure; periodic table of elements; behavior of gases; bonding; nuclear fusion and nuclear fission; chemical equations; properties of solutions; acids and bases; and chemical reactions. Student investigations emphasize accurate observations, collection of data, data analysis and the safe manipulation of scientific apparatus and materials during field and laboratory investigations.
