Attendance Regulations

General Information
The Attendance Office opens at 7:45 a.m. Students may bring their absence note from home or a doctor's note at that time.
The first school bell rings at 7:50 a.m. This bell allows students to come in for breakfast. Students in need of tutoring may enter the building earlier if they have a pass signed by a teacher.
The second bell rings at 8:20 a.m. This bell allows students to enter the school building.
At 8:30 a.m. the bell signaling the beginning of first period will ring. Students need to be seated in class at this time. Students who arrive after 8:30 a.m. are considered late to class.
Absences
If your child will be absent, please call the Attendance Office (210-442-0550 x 237) before 9:00 a.m.
Students who have been absent the previous day(s) need to return to school with a note from home or a doctor in order to be admitted into their classes. If the student does not have a note, he/she will receive a pink unexcused admit slip for classes.
Messages
Class instruction time cannot be interrupted; therefore only messages concerning FAMILY EMERGENCIES will be delivered to the student. Please make all necessary schedule arrangements with your child before school begins. After 3:00 p.m., messages WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Lost & Found
Lost and Found is located in the Attendance Office.
Students are only allowed to use the school phone for emergency reasons and must have permission from an administrator or teacher.
Attendance Policy
In Texas, children between the ages of 6 and 18, depending on when the child's birthday falls, are required to attend school unless otherwise exempted by law. School employees investigate and report violations of the state compulsory attendance law. Violation of compulsory attendance law may result in court action.
Minimum Attendance Requirements
State law requires that a student may not be given credit for a class unless the student is in attendance a minimum of 90% of the days the class is scheduled to meet. If a student is in attendance less that 90% (160 days) of the days the class meets, the student will lose credit unless each and every class is made up in an acceptable manner: i.e., Saturday School, after school hours, etc. Unusual extenuating circumstances would be a basis for appeal to the attendance review committee. The structure of the review committee, the procedures, and criteria to be considered are available from the administration. Attendance regulations and acceptable reasons for absences are located on pages 15 through 20 of the Student/Parent Handbook for Middle Schools.
Saturday School
Jackson Middle School's policy allows a student to attend Saturday School to make up an absence. However, going to Saturday School does not make an absence excused or exempt. Excessive absences, even with Saturday School attendance, could result in a hearing. Jackson Middle School will handle information regarding the payment and scheduling of Saturday School. Your child may pick up the sign-up form from the Attendance Office.
