Definitions:
Symbol:
A person,
object, or event that represents more than its literal meaning. Certain symbols
have a universal meaning: a skull symbolizes death; a set of scales symbolizes
justice; a light bulb going off over someone's head symbolizes the germ of an
idea. Others take on their meaning within their literary context, like the white
whale in Moby-Dick or the yellow wallpaper in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short
story, "The Yellow Wallpaper."

Symbolism:
The use of
imagery so that one object represents something else. In literature, symbolism
is the use of the objects or actions to suggest ideas or emotions. For example,
roses are a symbol of love. In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth attempts to wash her hands
symbolizing her desire to cleanse herself of guilt.
