SAFE AND DRUG FREE SCHOOLS STATE CONFERENCE Corpus Christi, Texas February 10-12, 2002 |
|
The PAL team from the International School of the Americas was selected to present during the annual Safe and Drug Free Schools State conference. The topic of the session is "Teens Today, Adults Tomorrow: Talking with your future." The presentation worked to create an engaging and informative presentation full of insights about effective strategies for adults having conversations with teens about teen issues. The following members of ISA's PAL team were involved with creating the presentation: Abby Arredondo, John Carranza, Jenna Hardy, Jack Sanford, Loretta Trevino, Jewell Vandiver, Christen Vasquez, and David Yasin. John, Jenna, Jack, and Jewell were the students who took the presentation to the conference. Congratulations to these teens who used what they have learned and experienced to educate others! |

| Part of the presentation focused on helping adults to determine the difference between responses that facilitate and do not facilitate further conversation with young people. | The presentation also focused on the need for students to feel encouraged by the adults in their lives. Here Jenna points out that encouragement should not create a false sense of hope for students; it should be specific and realistic. |

| The adults were encouraged to share with each other some of the instances in their careers when they knew they had formed a positive line of communication with a student. | The session ended with a silent discussion for attendees and presenters to explore how they really feel about the teens. |
