Peer Assistance and Leadership

Course Objectives

· To provide training for each PAL in a wide variety of areas including:

o       communication skills, problem-solving techniques, decision-making options,   

o       background in group dynamics, drug and alcohol education and prevention

o       information, and knowledge of referral resources for peers and PALees

· To enhance the self-concept, sense of responsibility and coping skills of the

o       PAL students

· To help other students have more positive and productive experiences at

o       school

· To help other students make more informed and responsible decisions

· To provide tutorial help, discussion sessions, and individual support to peers

· To help new students adjust to the school and its culture

· To serve as a resource to teachers, administrators and counselors

· To provide service opportunities to the school community

Course Expectations:

·   For each PAL to uphold the ISA PAL Code of Ethics, including:

·   be on time and “ready to go” when the tardy bell rings

·   fully participate and support the activities of the PAL team

·   to uphold confidentiality for PALees and classmates while realizing the limitations of confidentiality

·   accomplish 40 hours of training beyond the PAL basic curriculum

·   keep your records up-to-date

Grading Policy:

Each nine weeks there are various assignments for the course including:

- self-evaluation

- reports completion

- bulletin board assignments

- service participation

- training homework

- class participation

- projects

All PALs are expected to complete these assignments in a timely and professional manner.
